Super Flower SF-800P14XE Review

Using a reliable PSU is crucial for the system’s stability. Many users only rely on wattage, but this is totally wrong, as a cheap 1000W PSU can be much worse for the system than a high-quality 500W one, as many factors determine the quality of a PSU. Today we are testing the Super Flower SF-800P14XE PSU, which has an 80 Plus Gold certification.

Super Flower was founded in 1991 and their headquarters are located in Taiwan. They specialize in making high-quality PSU’s and PC cases.

Let’s take a quick look at the PSU’s specs:

A Closer Look – The Box

The Super Flower SF-800P14XE comes in a simple cardbox that has black and gold colour combinations. At the front we can see an illustration of the actual PSU, as well as some basic features of the PSU. There are also nVidia and ATI logos at the bottom left corner. 
At the back side we can find a detailed specs report as well as the cable connectors utilized. At the sides of the box we can find information on the components of the PSU, as well as detailed features. Once you open up the top cover, you can see a transparent window that lets you see the fan of the PSU.


A Closer Look – Package Contents

When the box is opened, we can see that the contents are nicely packed and are covered by protective foam to protect them from damage.

As the Super Flower SF-800P14XE is of modular design, you will find the cables separately. The cables included are:
2x  PCI-E 6 pin connector (550mm) (2 cables w/1 connector ea.)
2x PCI-E 6+2 pin connector (550mm) (2 cables w/1 connector ea.)
4x  5.25″ Drive 4 pin (500mm + 150mm + 150mm), 3.5″ Drive 4 pin (+150mm)
4x SATA (500mm + 150mm),  5.25″ Drive 4 pin (+ 150mm + 150mm)
8x SATA (500mm + 150mm + 150mm + 150mm) (2 cables w/ 4 connectors ea.)

All the cables are fully sleeved, thus fully protected and isolated. Super Flower also included a neat bag inside the package to store the modular cables. Of course, inside the package you will also find the power cord and four thumb-screws needed to mount the PSU. There is also a User Guide that can help the user overcome any problems during installation or operation of the PSU.


A Closer Look – The Fan

The Super Flower SF-800P14XE utilizes a 140mm led fan, that feels solid and well-made. The blades are transparent to enhance lighting effects. The fan is manufactured by Super Flower themselves. The fan’s motor runs is at 12V, 0.3A, and consumes 3.6W.


A Closer Look – The PSU

The Super Flower SF-800P14XE comes in a matte black finish and the build quality is solid, you can tell that by the first time you have the PSU in your hands. At the left side we can find the PSU’s technical specifications. At the back side we can find  an open mesh grill for better airflow, the AC input and an On/Off switch. A nice feature is that all modular connectors are covered with rubber pads so they are protected from dust. This way you can leave the connectors you do not need to use covered during operation. A total of eight modular connectors is supplied. The fixed cables are a 20+4pin ATX cable, a 4+4pin EPS12V/ATX12V power cable, and a 6+2pin PCIe cable.


 A Closer Look – The PSU Interior

Upon removing the top cover and the fan, we can see that the overall design and construction have been made very carefully. Large heatsinks are used to cool the power supply. The AC transient filter is made from two Y caps, one X cap, and a coil. The PSU utilises dual Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors rated at 400V and 330 µF and 400V and 470 µFFilter caps have been added to the rear of the modular PCB. At the left side of the PSU we can find the PFC controller, an NCP1653A. At the above pictures we can see the VRMS converters which are placed at the rear side of the PSU.


 Test Setup and Procedures

The machine’s specs on which we tested the psu are:

RAM: 6 GB Mushkin 6-7-6-18
VGA: 2 x Gigabyte GTX480 1536MB
HDD: Velocity Raptor 150GB
PSU: Super Flower Golden Green 800W
Case: Thermaltake Armor VA8003BWS
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

  • Power Consumption
  • Noise Levels
  • Efficiency Test

From the above diagram we can see that the idle rail voltages are satisfying.

Under system load, the voltages once again proved to be stable.

The power consumption at idle system mode was 413W, while under laord it peaked at 900W.

In both system conditions the noise levels are considered low.



The Super Flower SF-800P14XE is a well-built PSU and you can tell that by the first moment you unpack it. We particularly liked the protection pads used at the modular connectors. During operation, the PSU was very quiet even at full system load, and looked good in our case thanks to the LED fan.
The unit is a rock-solid power supply thad achieved very good performance and kept our system stable during our tests. It stayed moderately warm in touch after hours of operation, so heat will not be a problem.
Costing around 180 euros in Europe, the Super Flower SF-800P14XE belongs to the mid-to-expensive price category, but we can surely say that it is totally worth the money, as a powerful and reliable PSU is a year-lasting investment that can be used not only in one PC system. It is still cheaper than many other 80 Plus Gold certificated PSU’s.
