Noctua NF-B9 Review

Using a high-performance PC case fan can determine airflow and system operating temperatures at a great extent. Today we are testing the Noctua NF-B9, a 92mm fan from one of the most major players in the cooling market, Noctua.

 

 

Noctua was founded in 2005 and their headquarters are located in Austria. They specialise in silent PC cooling products.

A Closer Look – Package and Accessories


The Noctua NF-B9 comes in a flashy part-transparent box in the usual colour combinations of Noctua packaging. At the front side we can find the dimensions of the fan, as well as the product’s main features.

At the back side of the box we can find a detailed report on the fan’s specs and features, with schematics.

The Noctua NF-B9 Fan comes packaged ready to install. Craftmanship and perfection would be the words when referring to Noctua fans.

In addition to normal mounting screws, inside tha package there are four vibration compensators, which are plastic pins that act similar to rubber or silicon grommets to help prevent vibration transfer between the fan and the PC case.

The fan also comes with another 3-pin adapters which control the fan’s RPM, this way adjusting the balance between cooling performance and noise levels.

 

A Closer Look – The Fan


As usually, the fan has a solid build quality and is packed with advanced design features:

  • Vortex-Control Notches
  • Psychoacoustic optimizations like the Vortex-Control Notches make the NF-B9’s noise pattern more pleasant to the human ear. 
  • Smooth Commutation Drive
  • The new SC drive system reduces torque variations and thereby ensures improved running smoothness, particularly at lower speeds. 
  • Self-stabilizing oil-pressure bearing
  • Noctua’s well proven SSO-Bearing technology guarantees supremely quiet operation and exceptional long-term stability. 

The fan is colored with Noctua’s signature colour theme, and the 3-pin fan is sleeved with black mesh to reduce kinking and ensure long life.


Here are the Bevelled Blade Tips. Due to advanced design features like this, the NF-B9 is surprisingly quiet despite its outstanding airflow and pressure performance. An exceptional level of performance is achieved, that most other fans can reach at much higher speeds.

 

Test Setup and Procedures

We did not make the tests with the fans installed in a PC case or on a CPU heatsink, as many factors can alter airflow and temperature. Instead, all the measurements were done on a bench table with an air temperature of 22 degrees celsius, and with the fans operating at maximum voltage.

We used the following tools to measure airflow and sound levels:

 

  •    Kestrel 4500-Anemometer
  •    TES1352H-soundmeter

 

So it is quite understandable that the test included:

  • Noise measurement
  • Price Comparison


We tested Noctua’s fan against:

 

  • FRACTAL DESIGN FD 92MM
  • SCYTHE KAZE JYU SLIM 2000
  • NEXUS 92MM BASIC

 

Test Results


At our airflow test, Noctua’s fan delivered maximum airflow compared to the other contestants.

From several previous reviews, we have seen that Noctua specialises in making silent cooling products, and this is proved here, as the NF-B9 proved to perform without annoying the user. Fractal Design’s FD was also close.

While the Noctua NF-B9 may be slightly more expensive than the other fans, it is absolutely worth the money.

 

Verdict

The Noctua NF-B9 was the best performer during our tests, while being silent. We can easily say that this 92mm fan is totally worth the money considering the cooling performance it offers, even though there are cheaper alternatives in the market.
