Lian Li EX-H33 Black SATA Hot Swap HDD Rack Kit Review

It is always important for the hard drives of a PC system to remain as cool as possible, and the truth is that there are not so many products in the market for this purpose compared to these used for CPU or VGA cooling. The Lian Li EX-H33 is a HDD Rack Kit which can hold up to 3 hard disks and has a fan at the front side to keep them cool. It is designed for use with Lian Li’s PC cases.

Lian Li was founded in 1983 and their headquarters are located in Taiwan. Their product range includes PC cases, notebook accessories, HDD enclosures, coolers and more.

Let’s take a look at the Lian Li EX-H33 specs:

Material: Aluminium
Filter: Washable filter

Fan Type: 120 mm ball-bearing fan
Fan Power Output: 3.24 W

A Closer Look

The Lian Li EX-H33 comes in a big card box. At the front side we find an illustration of the hard drive kit.

At the back side we find a brief installation guide with pictures.

The cage comes with a nice aluminium front panel in black color so it can match with black aluminium Lian Li cases.

Here we see the 3 hard disc bay. At the end of the tunell there is a 12 cm Lian Li fan accompanied with a dust filter.

Above we take an idea of the hard disks’ installation, which is very easy. Furhermore, the disks are mounted using anti-vibration rubbers, which help the drives remain steady.

Test Setup and Procedures

Here is the machine on which we tested the rack:

Processor: Intel Core i7 920
Motherboard: Asus P6X85D
RAM: 6 GB Mushkin 6-7-6-18
VGA: Gigabyte GTX480 1536MB
HDD: Western Digital WD10EAVS Caviar Green 1TB SATA 8MB x 3 times
PSU: Nexus 1000W
Case: Lian Li PC-P80
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

We  measured the temperature using 3 Western Digital WD10EAVS Caviar Green 1TB SATA 8MB, at two occasions:

  • Mounted using the EX-H33 rack
  • Mounted the usual way on the chassis without the EX-H33

Test Results

Using one hard disk, we noticed an important 10 degrees celsius drop while using Lian Li’s rack. It seems that the fan really does its job efficiently cooling the hard drive.

Even when using 2 disks, there is a large drop in temperature as well.

At the last test we used all our 3 hard drives. We noticed lower temperatures at all 3 disks. It seems that the fan cools efficiently all the area it covers.

Verdict

While it is not necessary, the Lian Li EX-H33 is a nice addition for the system. Costing around 35 euros in Europe, it is not exactly a bargain, we would say it is a bit overpriced. Also, it is designed to fit only with Lian Li PC cases, which is somehow limiting. However, it is well built, with aluminium body, and does the job it promises very well as it managed to keep all our hard drives in a significantly cooler state.

Pros

(+) Aluminium build
(+) Good airflow
(+) Washable dust filter

Cons

(-) Price
(-) Only for Lian Li cases

Thus, we give the Lian Li EX-H33 a rating of 7.0/10
