Packaging

Depending on which fan out of the Silent  series it is there will be a sticker that is placed denoting the model it is. The Silent 7 packaging is a mirror image of the Silent 14, but smaller.
Rotating to the back shows the statistics of each type of fan in the Silent series, with a sticker next to the fan that is inside.

The test units included the following:

  •    4 Rubber Fan Mounts(140mm)
  •    4 metal screws(70mm)

The included rubber fan mounts on 140mm help absorb fan vibration and isolate noise. The 70mm has traditional metal screws for installation.

A Closer Look – The Gelid Silent Series Fans

We will focus a little more on each model, starting with the regular Silent 140mm.

The non-PWM Silent 140mm runs at 1000RPM which moves approximately 64.8CFM of air at around 21dBA. Since this model of the Silent 140mm is not PWM controlled, it simply uses a standard 3-pin fan connector for power.

The PWM version of the Silent 140mm  is essentially the previous one on steroids. Since it needs extra cooling abilities to keep today’s hot CPUs running safely, this fan can run from 750 to 1200RPM. It can move a maximum airflow of 74.5CFM and sound levels will vary from about 12-25.1 decibels. Other than those minor spec changes, there are no other differences between the two silent models.

The 140mm four-pin PWM plug can be installed into either three or four pin fan connections, and is geared toward CPU cooling usage.

These fans  use the Hydro Dynamic bearings, which are an improved version of the sleeve bearing.

Designed for advanced users the PWM GELID Silent fans provide additional airflow by using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to automatically adjust fan speed according to the CPU load. The fan can be idled down and thus be much quieter.  An intelligent IC had been integrated into the fan’s PCB to exploit your mainboard’s BIOS software. This technology is more efficient and convenient than using an external fan controller to adjust the voltage. Each fan impeller has been individually balanced using the latest technology to guarantee steady, unwavering operation.

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) delivers a digital signal. The advantages of using a digital PWM signal compared to an analogue controller are:

– PWM control calculates the appropriate cooling performance according to CPU and System temperature     – PWM control of your mainboard will always adjust to the correct cooling
– PWM control operates without generating any heat

A black frame casing surrounds the white blades of the 70mm fan, with the GELID logo adorned on the center. While the features list for this fan boasts “Optimized fan blades”, to the naked eye there isn’t much difference between this fan and other fans on the market.

Test Setup, Results and Verdict

To determine if the Gelid Silent series fans are worth buying, we performed two tests:

  •    Motherboard Temperature Test
  •    Noise Levels Test (Chassis)

We used one generic included ATX case fan for the intake and one of Gelid’s fans for taking the hot air outside the case. The fan was placed at the back of the case and we measured case temperatures . The fans were not used with any adaptors so they performed at max RPM except for the automatic RPM adjustment done by the 140mm Silent PWM.
The test system on which the tests were performed was:

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 Stock
Motherboard: Asus P6T SE
RAM: Transcend 2GB x 3
VGA: Gigabyte GTX480 1536MB
HDD: Velocity Raptor 150GB
PSU: High Power P5550 Pro
Case: Antec One
Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit

All temperatures remained at moderate levels(except the little 70mm fan) , something expected of course since the airflow is average. The strong point is the lack of noise produced by the fans.
However, in the small 70mm model the noise was too high for its size.

The GELID Silent fans are inexpensive and well designed fans that fits well with the needs of those aiming for quiet cooling solutions for their PC. Although the performance is not outstanding, the noise levels produced by the fans are certainly impressive. The GELID Silent series was designed for silent enthusiasts. GELID Silent fans provide normal airflow without increasing noise levels and at affordable prices. Precisely balanced fan blades and long life Hydro Dynamic bearing guarantee ultra low noise levels.

The GELID Silent Fans are RoHS and WEEE conformant. Silent 7 has 3 years and Silent 14 & Silent 14 PWM have 5 years warranty.

The price of the fans is as follows:

  •    Silent 7 USD 5 / EUR 3.10
  •    Silent 14 USD 7 / EUR 5.20
  •    Silent 14 PWM USD 12 / EUR 8.80

As you can understand, these fans are a top value for money choice for someone wanting to efficiently cool his system while keeping noise levels down.

Pros

(+) Silent operation
(+) Inexpensive

Cons

(-) Average airflow

Thus, we would like to give the Gelid Silent Series Fans our Value For Money Award.
